  • First Draft of a New ELCA Social Statement on Human Sexuality available on March 13, 2008

"One way of picturing the social statement is a bridge.  We seek to fashion a theological bridge that can handle the heavy traffic of human sexuality issues of our times and (to) do so without losing our evangelical focus," said  Bishop Peter Strommen, chair of the ELCA Task Force.
The draft of the proposed social statement on human sexuality will be posted at http://www.ELCA.org/faithfuljourney and sent to clergy and other professional leaders of the ELCA.  Between March and November, a series of hearings on the draft document will be held across the church.    Members of the task force will participate in the hearings and gather feedback on the draft until Nov. 1.
A proposed social statement on human sexuality is due in early 2009.  The final proposed statement will be given to the ELCA Church Council with a request to place the document on the agenda of the 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly for action.  The assembly will be held Aug. 17-23, 2009, in Minneapolis.
Information about the ELCA Studies on Sexuality is at http://www.ELCA.org/faithfuljourney on the ELCA Web site.

  • A Hearing on the first draft of the ELCA Social Statement on Human Sexuality will be held at the Florida-Bahamas Synod Assembly on May 3, 2008

  • An important step in the ELCA social statement process is to hold hearings in order to hear the responses to the draft from members in synods ad other interested groups.  Present at the hearings is a representative of the ELCA task force and a recorder who will report back to the task force when they meet to consider revisions.

Each participant in the hearing is asked to have read and studied the draft statement.  The draft statement will be online at www.elca.org/faithfuljourney .  Single complementary copies may be obtained by calling the Church in Society Request Line at 800-638-3522 ext 2996.  Please clearly pronounce and spell you name and mailing address and leave a phone number.  Bulk printed copies will be available from Augsburg Fortress (800-328-4648).  Ask for “First Draft of a Social Statement on Human Sexuality.”  Cost is 25 cents per copy plus shipping and handling.

You may sign up for the hearing by registering for the Synod Assembly as a voting member or visitor and choosing the hearing as one of the workshops.  You may also respond in writing to the draft statement if you do not attend the hearing.  A response form is provided at the back of the draft, or you may response online at www.elca.org/faithfuljourney
