2012 Assembly Summary

The 25th Annual Assembly of the Florida-Bahamas Synod was held at the Buena Vista Palace Hotel in Orlando on May 4-6, 2012. There were 435 voting members, 180 clergy and 20 lay rostered persons, 208 lay members, and 27 others (Synod Council, Conference Chairs and 11 Youth). 76 visitors registered as well. Norman and Donna Figy directed 25 volunteers who served as pages, ushers, and support personnel.

At the Synod Assembly, I announced two changes in the staff of the Office of the Bishop. 
It takes a "village" to plan and execute a Synod Assembly. We are so grateful for all who willingly served and lent an extra hand to make our time together hospitable, inspiring and smooth! 
The Florida-Bahamas Synod is excited to begin a one-year journey with Aaron Schaedler, a Young Adult in Global Mission for the ELCA. Throughout the year, he will be sending us updates and pictures of his experiences as a missionary in Cuernavaca, Mexico. 
We celebrate with St. John, Jacksonville as they complete their community garden and prayer labyrinth! 
Summer Camp at Luther Springs, Florida, is a memorable and transformational experience for children in grades 1-12.

Hospitality can be a theological concept, an attitude, an experience. It can also be a spiritual practice. The Editorial Board, with the Synod Assembly theme in mind, has, over the course of a few months, collected random thoughts about Hospitality as Spiritual Practice. We offer them for your consideration and thought. 
Four resolutions will come before the 2012 Synod Assembly for a vote. You are encouraged to read and study them. 
The offering taken at our 2012 Synod Assembly will be sent to the ELCA Malaria Campaign. Florida can make an impact on Malaria in Africa! Congregations can send a check with their voting members. Stop by the Malaria Campaign display and receive a button to wear at assembly and when you return home.
